The Trustco United netball team returned to the courts this weekend after a five-year break at the 2022 derby between Trustco United and FNB Wanderers. United netball coach Enrica Farmer is also overjoyed at the platform her team has received.

“I think it’s quite a pat on the back that we are playing up,” she said.

The United junior netball team clinched a victory over the Wanderers team, but in the senior division, Wanderers claimed a victory with 44-33 on the scoreboard.

For Farmer, these matches served as an opportunity to see her team in action and find their weak spots.

“I think we need to work on our mental ability. Our players are strong, but once they get to the competition they seem to be a bit spooked,” the coach pointed out.

She stressed that especially those responsible for goals need to go back to the drawing board.

“I think I need to go drill my shooters. The defense can be very good, but you only score points with goals so if it fails at the shooter, there is nothing we can do.”

Maryke Mertens, the netball coach for Wanderers, was elated at her team’s performance but believes that nothing is ever perfect.

“I think you can always improve, but today I think we could have done better at working as a team. Going forward, I’d like to look at balancing the team and look at every player on an individual level,” Mertens said.
