A Namibian abroad: An exchange that transformed my world
UNAM social work student Olsen Siyunda recently returned from a transformative academic exchange programme hosted by the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences in Germany. This enriching experience, made possible with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the University of Namibia, allowed Olsen to delve into the field of transnational social work and gain invaluable insights into global approaches to social justice and community development.
"The exchange broadened my worldview significantly," Olsen shared, reflecting on his time abroad. "It has strengthened my commitment to making a meaningful impact in my community back home."
He hopes his story will inspire more male students to seize similar opportunities.
Among the highlights of his time in Europe was a visit to Paris. "Seeing the Eiffel Tower was a major bucket list moment for me," he said. "The sheer size of the tower was breathtaking, and climbing to the summit offered a stunning panoramic view of the city. Walking the Parisian streets truly immersed me in its culture and history, making it an unforgettable experience."
Olsen often found himself answering the question, "Where is Namibia?" Many were surprised by the country's vastness relative to its population and curious about its linguistic diversity. "I was always happy to educate them about Namibia’s rich cultural heritage," he explained.
Adjusting to the German winter presented a unique challenge for him. "I've never been a fan of cold weather, so adapting to the freezing temperatures was quite challenging," he admitted. However, he gradually found ways to cope, demonstrating his resilience and adaptability. "Stepping outside of my comfort zone ultimately helped me grow," he noted.
Cultural immersion
Living in a different culture fostered a deeper appreciation for his own. "It made me realise how important it is to preserve and share my culture, especially since many people around the world are unfamiliar with Namibia," Olsen reflected.
"I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the traditions and values that shape my identity."
For students contemplating studying abroad, he said: "If you see an opportunity, take it! This experience exposes you to new perspectives, builds your confidence, and allows you to form meaningful connections with other students and professors. These networks can be invaluable in your future career. Additionally, studying abroad gives you a chance to travel, explore new cultures, and gain a broader understanding of the world."
When asked to describe his exchange experience in five words, Olsen chose: "breathtaking, amazing, transformative, enriching and unforgettable".
While he missed his family and the taste of home-cooked Namibian meals, technology helped him stay connected.
Olsen encourages all students considering an exchange programme to "use these opportunities wisely. Build international networks, engage with different cultures, and embrace every moment. Beyond academics, take the time to explore your host country, meet new people, and create lasting memories. This experience will not only shape your education but also your outlook on life."
