A step forward in healthcare access

UNAM recently inaugurated its first campus pharmacy which is a few of its kind in Africa

The event was attended by university officials, staff and students. The event highlighted the institution's commitment to providing accessible healthcare services while enhancing practical learning for pharmacy students.

The event was attended by university officials, staff and students. The event highlighted the institution's commitment to providing accessible healthcare services while enhancing practical learning for pharmacy students.

Facility for all

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Boni Singu, Associate Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Prof. Judith Hall, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences & Veterinary Medicine and Campus Director for Hage Geingob Campus, emphasized the pharmacy’s inclusive approach. In an insightful moment she shared that a cleaner had inquired whether they could use the pharmacy to which she responded, “Yes, of course. Everyone can use the pharmacy students, staff members including cleaners , security guards and the deans aswell as the public at large.”

A Vision for Excellence

UNAM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kenneth Matengu, in his inaugural remarks, highlighted the university’s broader vision of establishing top tier healthcare facilities. “This pharmacy is part of a chain of facilities we are intentionally designing. We already have an academic veterinary hospital and a veterinary clinic, and we are expanding into other areas such as dentistry, social work, and healthcare,” Prof. Matengu stated.

Prof. Matengu further emphasized that the university is committed to producing highly skilled professionals reinforcing UNAM’s mission to contribute to Namibia’s development. “We should be producing capable human resources that are competent to develop this country. These facilities allow students to learn in practice, ensuring they are well prepared for their careers,” Prof. Matengu said.

The Vice Chancellor also noted UNAM’s recognition by the African Union as a Center of Excellence in Fisheries and Aquaculture and hinted at further advancements. “In a few months, we will be opening our Center of Excellence in Cancer Imaging, addressing the growing burden of non communicable diseases,” Prof. Matengu revealed.

The inauguration ceremony concluded with Prof. Matengu cutting the ribbon officially opening the Campus Pharmacy. The facility is expected to provide affordable and accessible pharmaceutical services while serving as a vital training ground for pharmacy students.
