The University of Namibia (UNAM) Foundation launched its “Breakfast with the Vice Chancellor” event on Thursday, 27 March. The event, which was sponsored by Offixeconomix, serves as a platform for stakeholders such as Debmarine, GIZ, FirstRand Namibia, the World Health Organisation, among others who sponsor UNAM to engage the Vice Chancellor, Dr Kenneth Matengu on the vision and mission of the university.

During the event, Matengu highlighted the significant contributions that each stakeholder has brought to the development and growth of UNAM, stating that it is currently ranked as the 13th best tertiary institution in the continent. He mentioned the various projects such as the rice project that the university has engaged in with Japan and how the project has continued with Debmarine at their campus in Ogongo. Additionally, he stressed the importance of self-reliance, not only as a nation, but also as an institution.

He furthered these sentiments by announcing his strategic plan to align the goals of the university with that of the newly elected cabinet. Matengu highlighted the importance of investing in artificial intelligence, research and innovation, skill development and technical education, and building on capacity, saying “we need to get better at getting better”. He continued by criticizing the issue of unemployment among graduates saying,”As a nation we have made a mistake, we ask our children ‘what do you want to become?’ when we should rather be asking: ‘what problems do you want to solve?’”.

The event was an insightful and powerful beginning for the university and its stakeholders. The strategic goals of the university have been set out and the university now strives to be part of the top 10 best universities in the country.
