At just 22, Renella Matthews is proving that passion and purpose can come together to create something impactful.

As a final-year Bachelor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics student, she is also an entrepreneur on a mission to change the way young minds perceive and engage with mathematics. Through her project, Math Mastery, Matthews is redefining the learning experience and making mathematics more accessible, exciting and less intimidating for students.

Matthews' love for mathematics began in Grade 1 when she was fortunate to have inspiring teachers who nurtured her enthusiasm. Her mother also played a crucial role, ensuring she was always a step ahead by giving her higher-grade math exercises to broaden her knowledge.

In Grade 8, determined to challenge herself, Matthews participated in her first Math Olympiad, where her team secured an impressive third place. This experience proved her belief that mathematics could be both fun and rewarding.

The birth of Math Mastery

Matthews' journey with Math Mastery began as a small project. Initially, she shared her study experiences, late night sessions and motivational content on her social media platforms. This led to the creation of a WhatsApp community where students from both high school and university could support each other by “clocking in” and “clocking out” of study sessions.

Inspired by the engagement, Matthews decided to create a dedicated page on Instagram for her love of mathematics. The name Math Mastery came from her initials, MRM, but also represented her goal of mastering mathematics as well as helping students master mathematics.

"I started Math Mastery to challenge the idea that math is difficult. Mathematics is a language; one that anyone can learn with the right guidance and community," she explains.

"My biggest inspiration to start Math Mastery is my business partner Esther Nakaleke. She has a way of making math so simple for one to understand. She would tutor me before tests and exams."

Today, Math Mastery provides tutoring services in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry. The primary target market is high school learners from Grade 8 to 12, but the programme also supports first and second year university students in math and biology modules.

Overcoming challenges

Like any young entrepreneur, Matthews faced obstacles in launching her STEM-based business. Gaining trust from parents, students, and institutions was one of the biggest challenges.

"As a young entrepreneur, people doubt whether you have enough experience. I had to prove myself through consistency and results," she said.

However, Matthews has successfully balanced her studies, business and personal life. Outside of academics and work, she enjoys going to the gym, believing that a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind.

Matthews encourages young people, especially women, to pursue STEM fields with confidence. "Step into STEM boldly. The world needs your ideas, innovation and perspective. Find a support system, surround yourself with mentors, and embrace challenges as puzzles to solve, not roadblocks. Stay curious, take up space and let your voice be heard."

Through Math Mastery, Matthews proves that mathematics is not just about numbers: It’s about empowerment, problem-solving and so much more.
