On 27 March, The International School of Walvis Bay (ISWB) held its annual “stay-awake-a-thon” which serves as a fundraiser and an opportunity for learners to bond in a more relaxed, non-academic setting.

The event kicked off with all the classes taking part in a sports tournament, which included volleyball, soccer and netball. It was followed up by dinner where each year group prepared a potjie, along with a starter and, of course, dessert. The three-course meal was judged by four judges who, after long deliberations, announced that the AS level learners put together the most impressive presentation.

After the feast came the long-awaited talent show where learners who were courageous enough put their talents on display. Keanu Pool, a year nine learner, blew the crowd away with his angelic voice and rightfully won first place.

Then, at 02:00 the indoor games began. Each grade set up two games to be enjoyed by the rest of the learners. These games ranged from ping pong to musical chairs, which helped to keep the learners up and running.

Once all the games were played it was near the end of night. To end the night on a lively note the learners had a dance party where they used the last of their energy to jump around to their favourite songs.

“Even though it takes years off our lives, it is a fun event which we look forward to every year!” Luischen Sirakis, an English teacher at ISWB, said. “This year especially showed the enthusiasm and teamwork of all the teachers - primary and secondary - as they participated in all the events. It was lovely to be part of such a wonderful team," she continued.

In the end, the year seven learners won and the AS learners followed close behind. Well done to the youngest and the oldest of ISWB!
