NUST SRCs strive for student debt reprieve initiative

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has developed an initiative to assist fellow students by decreasing registration fees due to the increasing number of students unable to complete their studies due to outstanding fees.

NUST SRC President Michael Masengo said via their social media page that they have handed in a plea to the management for a payment plan debt reprieve and registration consideration.

The NUST SRC empathises with its fellow students, saying that they understand the financial burdens that many students face and are actively engaging with the administration to advocate for solutions.

According to Masengo, the student debt reprieve initiative aims to assist students who have debt of less than N$10 000, which will allow them to register for free the following year. This initiative was brought forth last year and had a positive impact on many students.

Vanessa Negumbo, a second year student working towards a Bachelor of Human Nutrition says that this initiative has helped her, adding that she can’t imagine a parent, such as her mother, having to pay registration fees for three children and still having to pay for transport, food, toiletries and other bills.

“I appreciate the initiative and am hoping the management approves it again for 2025 so that other students can also be assisted,” Negumbo said.

The NUST SRC remains hopeful that the submitted plea is approved again.
