Ohangwena schools strengthened by NamPower
Foundation invests over N$1 million to upgrade facilities and improve learning environments.
The NamPower Foundation, the social responsibility arm of the country’s leading power utility, has once again demonstrated its commitment to community development by supporting the construction of school infrastructure in the Ohangwena region. In a recent joint handover ceremony, the foundation officially handed over newly constructed facilities at Oluwaya Combined School and Titus Ndjaba Combined School, valued at more than N$1 million.
Speaking at the event, Isak Hamatwi, Director of Education for the Ohangwena region, emphasised the significance of the investment.
“This occasion is not merely a handover of a physical structure; it is a celebration of partnership. As we stand here today, we are witnessing the planting of a seed through this investment - an investment that brings visible improvements to school infrastructure, ensures safety for learners and adds dignity to the learning environment,” he said.
Hamatwi also highlighted the region’s large learner population, currently exceeding 134 000, and reminded attendees that educating a child is a collective national duty. “Here in Ohangwena, we proudly uphold the motto: Together, we educate.”
At Titus Ndjaba Combined School, Principal Thomas Uushona shared insight into the impact of the new classrooms. The school serves 457 learners with a staff complement of 17 teachers and two support staff, from pre-primary to Grade 11.
“Before the construction, four of our 13 classrooms were makeshift structures. Today, only one grade is still taught in a shack. We pledge to take care of this building so that it remains a space where future professionals and specialists emerge,” he said, encouraging learners to keep the environment graffiti-free.
Liaison officer for the NamPower Foundation Sarah Wayiti outlined the specific projects completed. “At Oluwaya we constructed a school fence and a guardhouse; for Titus Ndjaba, three new classrooms were built. Education is a crucial sector, and we are proud to partner with the government in improving school infrastructure.”
Wayiti also addressed learners directly, urging them to embrace opportunities, push boundaries, and recognise the transformative power of knowledge. “Together, we can create a nurturing and empowering environment where learners and teachers thrive and reach their full potential. Let us continue working together towards a brighter future for all,” she concluded.
