Connecting industries
The Old Mutual Foundation hosted the second annual Youth Indaba on Friday, 14 March 2025, at the One Economy Foundation’s #BeFree Youth Campus in Windhoek. Under the theme “Closing the Gap Between Education and Skills Development,” the event drew a large number of young people, including school going learners, seeking practical career insights.Chairperson of the Old Mutual Foundation, Patricia Olivier, said the growing disconnect between academic qualifications and industry requirements. “This Indaba was a platform for action, ensuring that young professionals acquire the necessary skills to navigate an evolving job market."
One of the highlights at the event was a panel discussion titled "Shaping the Future Through Skills and Innovation", where industry experts examined workforce adaptability and the effects of digital transformation. Economist, Salomo Hei, HR specialist Majory Mukasa, and psychologist Dr Mara Mberira were among the speakers who addressed topics including agricultural innovation, financial literacy, career development and mental health in the workplace.
Ranella Matthews, who attended both Indabas, said this year’s event gave her a better understanding of employment and job creation. “It was insightful and inspiring,” she said.
Dino Balloti, Executive Director of MSME Innovation & Acceleration at NIPDB, commended Old Mutual for its efforts in organising the event and inspiring young people. However, he expressed the need for future Indabas to be held outside of the Khomas Region to reach a wider audience and those not exposed to industry insights.
Demonstrating its commitment to education, the Old Mutual Foundation awarded N$10 000 towards school tuition for deserving students and school-going learners. This initiative reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to addressing youth unemployment through skills development.
