Sports Star of the Week: Melody Jaezuruka
Melody Jaezuruka, a 25-year-old hockey player for the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Hockey Club, has been playing field hockey for five years as a defender. Her journey began at the age of 18, and she quickly fell in love with the sport. “I’ve always loved being active and trying new sports,” she shares, recalling the energy and teamwork that hooked her from her first game.
Though it wasn’t easy at first, Jaezuruka remained determined. “It was tough, but regular practice and enjoying the game kept me going,” she says. The support of her team, who were also learning together, helped her stay motivated.
Jaezuruka’s family has been a strong support system throughout her journey. Her grandmother even bought her first hockey stick and shin guards, fueling her excitement to play.
As a student at NUST, she balances her studies with hockey by staying organised, ensuring schoolwork is complete before practice.
In 2022, Jaezuruka was named Field Hockey Player of the Year for NUST, an accolade that motivated her to take the sport more seriously. Despite facing setbacks like head injuries, her love for the game keeps her going. Her advice to new players: “Be patient, practice, and don’t fear mistakes since they help you grow.”
