Lwanda J. Gaseb is a 20-year-old, 6'4" centre who plays Division 1 (D1) basketball for the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) Gladiators.

Overcoming several challenges, he led his team to a championship while balancing academic commitments.

He credits his cousin for introducing him to the game and recalls how his mother randomly signed him up for basketball tryouts, “and that’s when I fell in love with the game. I got into basketball because, oddly enough, I found it complicated and fascinating, and I wanted to introduce myself to a new setting and a new challenge.”

Reflecting on his journey, Gaseb said, “My proudest moment was playing basketball for an entire year with inadequate shoes, because it helped me understand that you can persevere with sheer willpower and belief in yourself.”

His dedication has led to several notable achievements, including being selected to represent the Khomas Region in a regional tournament and helping the NUST Gladiators win a championship. “When my team won the championship and we got to lift the trophy, it was unforgettable!"

Balancing academics and sport remains a challenge. “It was never an easy task, and I still struggle with that from time to time,” Gaseb admits. “You have to choose between practice and studying, and after training, you’re often too tired to focus. But I’ve learnt to manage my time better with schedules.”

When asked about his role model, Gaseb immediately names Allen Iverson. “He stayed true to himself in a world that constantly tried to change him. Despite being doubted for his size and criticised for his style, he became one of the greatest. He proved you don’t need a perfect background to be great.”

Looking ahead, Gaseb is determined to keep growing. “Winning with the NUST Gladiators was special, but now I want to make the national team and play internationally,” he said. “Basketball gave me purpose, and I hope my journey inspires young athletes in Namibia to chase their dreams relentlessly.”
