Teen model struts her stuff at New York Fashion Week
From Namibia to the US
Namibian model Maike Steidler prepares for a trip to New York, where she will represent the country at one of the biggest international fashion shows.
Sixteen-year-old Maike Steidler is set to take on the Big Apple at the New York Fashion Week – one of the biggest fashion stages in the world.Maike will be in New York for ten days.
In 2024, Maike participated in the annual Talent Namibia competition, where she was scouted for the New York Fashion Week – a moment that validated her hard work and determination, and heralded a turning point in her modelling career.
Her modelling journey began at an early age, and now her hard work, dedication and passion have brought about prestigious international opportunities like this.
Maike started modelling when she was in grade 3 and over the years she went on to participate in two local pageants and took part in PROJECT AIM 2023.
“I started modelling at a young age, auditioning in front of Rolinda van den Heever from Figures Namibia. She suggested that I try modelling as well as dancing, but in the end, I developed a passion for modelling,” Maike said.
She continues her modelling career at Diamond International Modelling Agency where she is pursuing her Senior Advanced Diploma, demonstrating her commitment to expanding her career and determined to build a long-lasting presence in the industry.
If she had to sum up her journey so far in three words, Maike said “exciting, progress and confidence”. These words reflect her continuous growth and the confidence she has gained through her experiences.
When asked about her role model in the industry, Maike's admiration for Naomi Campbell shines through. Campbell, who is known for her fierce runway presence and iconic career, continues to be an inspiration to the young model who is working towards carving her path in modelling.
To ensure she is ready for the New York Fashion Week after flying out on Tuesday, she has been working with her modelling coach, Luzaan Blaauw.
She also watched many modelling videos and prepared herself mentally for the experience. For Maike, New York Fashion Week is more than just an event; it’s an opportunity to grow, meet new people and experience a new culture.
“I look forward to meeting new people and making friends while experiencing a new country on another continent,” Maike said.
The idea of showcasing her skills on an international stage excites her, and she hopes the experience will take her career to the next level.
As Maike takes on New York Fashion Week, she carries the pride of Namibia with her – a journey of a young model making her mark on the global stage.
