The day the 'sorts' joined the chat

If you thought sleepovers at friends’ houses were fun, then this was next level
Every year, new Grade 8s join Delta, and they really need a warm welcome as they are sorted, which is why they are called “sorts.” Once sorting is over, they have two major events on the same day: the sort concert and a stay-awake.

This year, the theme was the World Cup, so the learners were all dressed as football players. At around 17:00, the sort concert began. Most of the juniors were quite nervous, since for some, it was their first time performing in front of such a large audience. When they stepped onto the stage, it felt as if the whole world was watching.

Luckily, they managed to pull themselves together and calm down.

The first group sang a song from one of the World Cups, which went down well. However, when the acting group took to the stage, their performance was exceptional. They had to recreate an actual football match and nailed it!

After the performances, the boys and girls changed into their official school uniform. This was probably the highlight of the evening. All the Grade 8s walked onto the stage, sang the school anthem, recited the creed, and were officially welcomed as proud Deltarians.

Once the concert ended and the parents had gone home, the sorts changed into their pyjamas and gathered in the main hall for the stay-awake. Boys and girls were separated by a line of chairs to ensure that nothing untoward happened. The LRCs filled their spray guns to deal with anyone caught dozing off.

Later in the night, the LRCs chased everyone onto the field. Geraldo tried to avoid going outside, saying, “If I touch grass at night, I get serious allergies, and my whole body starts to swell.” Somehow, he managed to escape, but the rest were soaked with freezing water. Not content, the LRCs played pranks, setting off a siren and pretending there were robbers. The juniors fled “like chickens,” only to be rounded up and brought back to the hall.

As the night went on, music played while many learners grew tired, and the LRCs continued to spray those who fell asleep. The following morning, the Grade 8s ran a lap around the field before being treated to hot dogs and juice. After eating, they packed up and went home.

Overall, they truly enjoyed their time as sorts and will hopefully share their experience with younger learners in the future.
